SsangYong XIV-2 Concept at 2012 Geneva motor show

The South Korean automaker SsangYong is planning a follow up to last year’s surprisingly popular XIV-1 compact crossover concept.

The latest study, dubbed the XIV-2 (eXciting User Interface Vehicle 2), is essentially a convertible of the previous XIV-1 though SsangYong’s designers have managed to avoid creating a repeat of the oddity that is Nissan’s Murano CrossCabriolet.

That’s because the XIV-2 keeps its rugged crossover proportions thanks to a simple drawback roof rather than a complete convertible design.

More than just a design study, however, the XIV-2 and previous XIV-1 are a preview of SsangYong’s upcoming compact crossover designed for Europe and other markets where the South Korean brand’s vehicles are sold.

Measuring 13.6 feet in length, 6 feet in width, 5.1 feet in height, and with a wheelbase of 8.5 feet, the XIV-2 should offer plenty of punch when fitted with its proposed 1.6-liter diesel or gasoline engines.

The new SsangYong XIV-2 convertible concept will make its official world debut at next month’s 2012 Geneva Motor Show.
